Cooking Tour in Hoi An Ancient town
Western tourists visiting Asian countries are often impressed by unique Asian cuisine activities, especially the dinners with specialties in different countries. But the most attractive to most tourists is cooking classes where they have their opportunity to prepare and make the dishes they like. What a great experience that no cooking book can offer?
The heaven of those who love cuisine
Cooking tour in Hoi An ranks first among the ones in many other places in Vietnam including Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City for many reasons.
Firstly, the cooking classes are usually taken place in the charming spaces of Hoi An Ancient town such as in the peaceful gardens or in the ancient houses. Secondly, the original local specialties that there are nowhere respond to the typical dishes of Vietnamese cuisine like Pho (noodle soup), Bun bo (beef noodle soup). Next is the Hoi An market, where the sellers are always friendly and their goods is always fresh. Finally, it is the good training staff that is always enthusiastic and conscientious.
According to Caroline Mills, a journalist from the Travelfish online magazine, two most typical features of Hoi An tourism that have attracted visitors the most are tailoring and cooking class services.
"It is in Hoi An that I become cleverer. I love to prepare a meal for my family right here. Everything is perfect, from the butchers with smiles welcoming me to the dinner with the broil that is made by myself after a short cooking course. I love cooking and have learnt the way to cook many Vietnamese dishes here... But street foods are still cheaper!", said Caroline.
Where to learn cooking
The cooking classes like the ones Caroline Mills has taken part are organized in many places of Hoi An. It is Morning Glory restaurant (at 106 Nguyen Thai Hoc street) where she learned most of the Hoi An street foods, especially the famous Banh Xeo (rice pancakes). The next places are Red Bridge restaurant (in hamlet 4, Cam Thanh commune), Green Bamboo restaurant (Truong Minh Hung street, Cam An ward)...
The cooking class in Green Bamboo may be the most unforgettable to Caroline because it occurred at Tra Que vegetable garden, an integral destinatioatn in Hoi An where tourists can plant vegetable and experience a relaxing massage for feet with many local medicinal herbs.
Tourists can register half-day cooking tours Taste of Hoi An (at 109 Nguyen Thai Hoc street) which are organized by Neville Dean, an Australian living here with his wife. This kind of cooking tours is fairly attractive to visitors from Australia, New Zealand and Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
For Lisa and her friends from Norway, cooking classes in Hoi An are an incomparable travel experience. "We go to the market and learn the kinds of strange local vegetables and fruit which will be used for cooking. In the class, we are equipped with pinny and chef hat. Loving cooking, we feel interested in preparing everything for our dishes such as Goi bap chuoi (the dish made of banana inflorescence), Goi cuon (the roll), Hoi An rice pancake and pot-au-feu. We also learned how to make flowers form tomatoes, carrots and beets..." shared Lisa.
"It is great to participate in this tour. After the tour, we will present our achievements with the dishes acquired from the cooking classes in Hoi An to our family or friends in our homeland. Goi cuon is an excellent snack in the campus.", added Lisa.
